High overexploitation risk due to management shortfall in highly traded requiem sharks

چکیده

Most of the international trade in fins (and likely meat too) is derived from requiem sharks (family Carcharhinidae), yet only two 56 species currently regulated. Here, we quantify catch, trade, and shortfall national regional fisheries management (M-Risk) for all shark based on 831 assessments across 30 countries four Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs). Requiem comprise over half (60%) annual reported global Chondrichthyan catch with most (86%) identified fin trade. are inadequately managed by fisheries, an average M-Risk (50%) ideal score, consequently 70% threatened globally. The high volume these iconic require worldwide sustainable supported full implementation CITES regulations this newly listed family.

Relations between morphology, buoyancy and energetics of requiem sharks

Sharks have a distinctive shape that remained practically unchanged through hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Nonetheless, there are variations of this shape that vary between and within species. We attempt to explain these variations by examining the partial derivatives of the cost of transport of a generic shark with respect to buoyancy, span and chord of its pectoral fins, length, ...

Monitoring of land subsidence due to overexploitation of groundwater using PS-InSAR in the region in hamadan proviance, Iran

Land subsidence is one of the environmental hazards that has been less well-regarded by human societies due to lower human casualties. However, the earth subsidence causes irreparable damage to the urban areas and adjacent plains over time. In this study, Permanent Scatterer (PS) method has been used to monitor land subsidence in the region in hamadan proviance and its adjacent plains in west o...

Budget boosts mask management shortfall

There have been many envious looks from researchers in countries coveting Britain's recent increases in its science budget. With headline figures well ahead of inflation, few other governments have been able to show such enthusiasm for science. But a recent report has cast a few doubts over the size of the latest increase and, for the universities, such a boost comes against a background of oth...

Model Risk of Expected Shortfall

In this paper we study the model risk of Expected Shortfall (ES), extending the results of Boucher et al. (2014) on model risk of Value-at-Risk (VaR). We propose a correction formula for ES based on passing three backtests. Our results show that for the DJIA index, the smallest corrections are required for the ES estimates built using GARCH models. Furthermore, the 2.5% ES requires smaller corr...
